I have two cats, Claudius & Hamlet. I adopted both of them from the SPCA about 9 mo. ago. It was scheduled for them both to be picked up on a Thursday but got a call on a Tuesday telling me to pick them up immediately because an Upper respiratory Infection was spreading through the building and they didn’t want to risk anything.

The SPCA supplied me with food, other essentials and a liquid form medication just in case they may have been sick. Hamlet has been really active, eaten a lot of food, become very muscular for a cat and is all around healthy. Claudius on the other hand has been sick on and off with not much of an explanation. The first two weeks or so was good, then he started deficating & urinating throughout the house in the form of bloody mucus like diarhea. I took him to the Vet and they said that he just may not be used to his surroundings just yet. (I don’t think that’s right. but okay?) I waited it out with him and kept a close eye. He got better.

Now, he just looks sick. He’s lost all the weight that he had (which wasn"t much to begin with). His face is puffy looking, he’s been asleep for about 4 days now and I have to physically make him eat, drink and use the bathroom. I at first thought it was allergies and learned that cats allergies are not at all like Human or Dog allergies.

Any pointers as to what it may be? I also wanted to know what medications can be given to a cat.

Feel free to E-Mail me or IM me,

Thanks

Hey its time to take it to a vet. Pets like to hide the fact that they are sick, it’s instinct. So seeing the signs of sickness usually means its serious. Make an appt with the SPCA or your vet As Soon As Possible.

Hi I’m opening a pet store that just sells supplies-no puppies (except when mine visit, of course.) or other animals besides rescues coming in. What supplies do other pet stores seem to be lacking?

Frozen raw food

Does anyone know a website that ships worldwide that i can buy cat and dog food?

i really can’t find any website that ships to all european countries.

the uk is filled with online pet stores but none of them does ship to my country,Greece.
in greere there are no such sites to order online and buy cheaper food, i know ultimately sucks. -.-

please let me know if anyone know an online pet food supply website that ships worldwide….

I have a red eared slider that is about 1.625 inches long. I have a heat/ UVA lamp. I was told at the pet store that this was enough for a RES. However, after doing research on he internet, I have found pout that it is necessary to have both UVA and UVB. I don’t have access to a UVB bulb. It is currently about 3 months until it becomes warm enough for the turtle to go outside to get natural sunlight. Can my turtle survive at least that long? Will natural sunlight supply enough UVB? If I do have to end up getting a UVB light, are there any bulbs that are UVB and UVA? If there aren’t, then how can I fit two bulbs on top of one basking area that is 6 inches by 3 inches?

Will it survive? Probably. But it may encounter health problems later. UVB bulbs will emit UVA also, but you will still need a source of heat for basking. Usually two bulbs are used, because of this. Mercury vapor bulbs will do both, but are a bit high-powered for small tanks.

On New Year’s Morning (a great morning to discover this) I found my parakeet Henry dead at the bottom of his cage. My family and I have had him for about two years since he was a few-month-older, and it was hard to see him like this, (he always looked like a little baby to us.)

But, now we also have a 6-9-month-old cockatiel. She’s on the other side of the room from where he used to be as I type this, and I’m really worried about her health after Henry’s sudden death. I’m planning on going to an avian vet to get her checked out as soon as we all possibly can, (which, unfortunately, won’t be for at least a few more days; we aren’t exactly centrally located to an actual avian clinic; everything we’ve been to handles solely cats and dogs), especially because she’s so young and her immune system can be susceptible to anything, especially compared to a 2-year-old.

About a week and a half to two weeks before Henry died, my mom and I decided to relocate him to a nicer part of our living room, which was a little bit higher than where he used to be. What we didn’t realize is that my dad had recently been tinkering with the heating vent nearby; the vent was exposed for a short time and was blowing hot air at him for the four days he stayed up there. I have to admit that sometimes we can forget to keep a keen eye on him, (at the time we were remodeling the house as well), and he didn’t get a good food-and-water change for at least a day and a half. When we found time to check on him, his water was completely bone dry, and the husks from his food dish were strewn all over his equally distressed cage. Shocked, we took him down immediately and put him back in his original lower place and replenished his water and food supply, but I guess health-wise, we may have been too late. Henry acted really weird after that, almost neurotic; a simple, everyday sound like someone coughing or a light turning on or off seemed to get him extremely agitated. His eyes were a little freaky, too; they constantly seemed to be dilating. Even though he was acting so weird, I figured that he was eating and drinking normally and was responding to contact, (in a flustered way, but I didn’t think much of it at the time), and that he would get over this funk in a week’s time or so, to which my mom agreed, (although as hesitantly as I did.) In the meantime, he was very lethargic, and we attributed it to the exhaustion from not receiving enough food and water for that amount of time.

Bindi – my younger cockatiel – shows a few symptoms like Henry did, although she shows them much, much more mildly. Turning on lights and making sounds does agitate her, but it’s more like a "grumpy cat" reaction, (ruffles up feathers, gives you a "what the heck did you do that for?" look, and goes back to her business.) She eats everything in sight (including the healthy stuff, something that I have to note that Henry never did; Henry was a fruit and treat junkie) and drinks water normally and at a regular basis, (in the meantime, since she’s in the vent area, but just at a lower height, I’ve been dropping small ice cubes in her water to make sure it stays cool enough to keep from drying out.) She gets lethargic as well, but my mom said that she heard from a bird-breeding friend of hers that birds as young as she is often require a lot of naps, so we haven’t paid much concern to that.

Anyway, I just want to know what happened to Henry both as closure to the mystery behind his death and as a reassurance that Bindi won’t have the same fate. Thanks so much if you can help. Like I said, the next opportunity we’ll have to find a clinic to take her to won’t be until at least a few more days, so we would really appreciate some at-home advice as to watching and caring for her until then. Also, as I said before, she is in the area that Henry was when he was near the vent, but she’s at a much lower position, and direct thermal contact between her and the vent is completely blocked by the Christmas tree we still have up, (and the vent is currently covered with the new grate.)

age can contribute however id would be mu guess that she died from sudden temp changes. from hot to cold and heat blows really hot if youre under the vent,.keep a close eye on the other if it is in the same spot make sure to protect him

Yeah im 29 and live at home with my parents my next door neighbor’s dog had puppies about 2 months ago. She cant find anyone to give the last puppy to and i have wanted a dog for a long time! One problem my parents wont let me have one. My dad said he would get one if you didn’t have to keep it in a fence. We live in the boon docks. I don’t work so i have plenty of time with it. Plus i get two checks a month i have the money to own a dog. I have read numerous dog books and stuff online im responsible of training that puppy. I want to spend my paycheck on the dog supplies the puppy is free. Mom doesn’t like dogs to lick her but it wont lick her if i train it not to. I have experience with dogs I watch my brothers when they go on vacation and my parents don’t mind that. I sound like a bratty 12 year old but im a grown women they should let me have a pet im home by myself until 7 every night i need company!
Oh i forgot the huge detail i guess everybody has to know im my boyfriend and i are working on buying a house!!!

I suggest you let your dad read this comment to him: What’s wrong with you? Your daughter is TWENTY-NINE!! She should be old enough to make her own choices! As long as she pays for it, and buys it’s food, etc., you should pay your daughter some respect.

Whenever I ask people this question they tell me that it’s because the pet isn’t in good shape or something and it’s better to save a dog from the shelter.

But isn’t getting a dog from the pet store saving that dog as well? I mean the poor thing needs a home, that’s why it’s being sold in the first place.

Thoughts?

The reason it’s being sold in the first place is not to give it a home- it’s to keep puppy mills in business.

As hard as it is to see a cute puppy in the pet store and leave it there, it’s the right thing to do. The only way to stop puppy mills is to stop buying dogs produced there. For every dog you buy in the pet store, another one is bred in terrible conditions at a puppy mill to replace it.

Here are some sites with varying international shipping policies:

http://www.petsmart.com/
http://www.petco.com
http://www.petfooddirect.com
http://www.jefferspet.com

I have a US address set up for my international shopping through http://www.bongous.com. I am in AU, but I know they ship to Greece.

Here is the link for transit times, etc. to Greece through Bongo:

We all know puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills, bad, but what about other animals in the store? Do they typically have a horrible upbringing and likely have health issues? Like snakes, ferrets, etc.

It all depends on the pet store. Petco and Petsmart aren’t the best place to get a pet and a lot of other pet stores are the same way but a few aren’t. My husband and I just recently visited a pet store in his home town that didn’t take good care of their pets. They all looked and acted sick. I would never support that pet store in any way.

On the other hand there are two pet stores in the area that I live in that seem to take very good care of their animals. In one of the stores I actually know one of the dog breeders as well as one of the rabbit breeders. Both these breeders are very good to their pets and love them very much. These pet stores have good reputations and I do my best to support them. The employees know a lot about the animals and are very helpful.

So even though most pet stores are bad some aren’t.

where can i get agility dog supplies besides online? are there any stores in northwest indiana or instructions on how to build your own?

PVC is cheap and easy to work with. You can find measurements online.
