I have two cats, Claudius & Hamlet. I adopted both of them from the SPCA about 9 mo. ago. It was scheduled for them both to be picked up on a Thursday but got a call on a Tuesday telling me to pick them up immediately because an Upper respiratory Infection was spreading through the building and they didn’t want to risk anything.
The SPCA supplied me with food, other essentials and a liquid form medication just in case they may have been sick. Hamlet has been really active, eaten a lot of food, become very muscular for a cat and is all around healthy. Claudius on the other hand has been sick on and off with not much of an explanation. The first two weeks or so was good, then he started deficating & urinating throughout the house in the form of bloody mucus like diarhea. I took him to the Vet and they said that he just may not be used to his surroundings just yet. (I don’t think that’s right. but okay?) I waited it out with him and kept a close eye. He got better.
Now, he just looks sick. He’s lost all the weight that he had (which wasn"t much to begin with). His face is puffy looking, he’s been asleep for about 4 days now and I have to physically make him eat, drink and use the bathroom. I at first thought it was allergies and learned that cats allergies are not at all like Human or Dog allergies.
Any pointers as to what it may be? I also wanted to know what medications can be given to a cat.

Hey its time to take it to a vet. Pets like to hide the fact that they are sick, it’s instinct. So seeing the signs of sickness usually means its serious. Make an appt with the SPCA or your vet As Soon As Possible.
On New Year’s Morning (a great morning to discover this) I found my parakeet Henry dead at the bottom of his cage. My family and I have had him for about two years since he was a few-month-older, and it was hard to see him like this, (he always looked like a little baby to us.)
But, now we also have a 6-9-month-old cockatiel. She’s on the other side of the room from where he used to be as I type this, and I’m really worried about her health after Henry’s sudden death. I’m planning on going to an avian vet to get her checked out as soon as we all possibly can, (which, unfortunately, won’t be for at least a few more days; we aren’t exactly centrally located to an actual avian clinic; everything we’ve been to handles solely cats and dogs), especially because she’s so young and her immune system can be susceptible to anything, especially compared to a 2-year-old.
About a week and a half to two weeks before Henry died, my mom and I decided to relocate him to a nicer part of our living room, which was a little bit higher than where he used to be. What we didn’t realize is that my dad had recently been tinkering with the heating vent nearby; the vent was exposed for a short time and was blowing hot air at him for the four days he stayed up there. I have to admit that sometimes we can forget to keep a keen eye on him, (at the time we were remodeling the house as well), and he didn’t get a good food-and-water change for at least a day and a half. When we found time to check on him, his water was completely bone dry, and the husks from his food dish were strewn all over his equally distressed cage. Shocked, we took him down immediately and put him back in his original lower place and replenished his water and food supply, but I guess health-wise, we may have been too late. Henry acted really weird after that, almost neurotic; a simple, everyday sound like someone coughing or a light turning on or off seemed to get him extremely agitated. His eyes were a little freaky, too; they constantly seemed to be dilating. Even though he was acting so weird, I figured that he was eating and drinking normally and was responding to contact, (in a flustered way, but I didn’t think much of it at the time), and that he would get over this funk in a week’s time or so, to which my mom agreed, (although as hesitantly as I did.) In the meantime, he was very lethargic, and we attributed it to the exhaustion from not receiving enough food and water for that amount of time.
Bindi – my younger cockatiel – shows a few symptoms like Henry did, although she shows them much, much more mildly. Turning on lights and making sounds does agitate her, but it’s more like a "grumpy cat" reaction, (ruffles up feathers, gives you a "what the heck did you do that for?" look, and goes back to her business.) She eats everything in sight (including the healthy stuff, something that I have to note that Henry never did; Henry was a fruit and treat junkie) and drinks water normally and at a regular basis, (in the meantime, since she’s in the vent area, but just at a lower height, I’ve been dropping small ice cubes in her water to make sure it stays cool enough to keep from drying out.) She gets lethargic as well, but my mom said that she heard from a bird-breeding friend of hers that birds as young as she is often require a lot of naps, so we haven’t paid much concern to that.
Anyway, I just want to know what happened to Henry both as closure to the mystery behind his death and as a reassurance that Bindi won’t have the same fate. Thanks so much if you can help. Like I said, the next opportunity we’ll have to find a clinic to take her to won’t be until at least a few more days, so we would really appreciate some at-home advice as to watching and caring for her until then. Also, as I said before, she is in the area that Henry was when he was near the vent, but she’s at a much lower position, and direct thermal contact between her and the vent is completely blocked by the Christmas tree we still have up, (and the vent is currently covered with the new grate.)

So the big moment is finally here! You’ve just adopted a new cat or kitten from your local shelter or rescue, rampaged through the pet store to stock up on supplies, toys and goodies, and visited the vet for a health-check, shots, and neutering. Now its time to introduce kitty to her new home and the rest of the family. With just a little planning and patience, you can ensure that your cats adjustment period will be as rapid and stress-free as possible.
Home Is Where the Catnip Is: Cats are, by nature, highly territorial, which means that having a place to call their own is extremely important to their emotional well-being. Your new cat is already in a state of stress from having been in a shelter or being given up for adoption, and being brought to a strange new home only increases that stress. Your goal is to help make your new cat feel comfortable as quickly as possible. When you bring your new cat home, confine it to a single room for at least the first few days (with food and litter, of course!). Although this may seem cruel by human standards, it is actually a great kindness to allow your cat to claim ownership of a small new territory at its own pace and without competition.
Some shy cats may hide under the bed for as long as a week; others will be ready to come out into the house and go exploring after just a day. The important thing is to let the cat emerge whenever it feels ready. You should spend as much time as possible in the room with the cat, but you should never try to force it out of hiding. The cat will let you know when its ready to begin exploring more of the house. Be sure to leave fresh food and water out at all times, and check that it is being consumed. Even stressed cats like to eat, so no food for 24 hours or more is possibly a sign of illness and warrants a trip to the vet.
Meeting the Family: Naturally, everyone in the family, especially the kids, will be excited about the new arrival. Children should be invited to visit the new kitty in her room, one at a time. Try to keep your children quiet and seated on these visits, so they do not frighten the cat if he’s not used to kids. Teach your children how to properly hold a cat: with one hand under the rump and one hand on the back, held up against their bodies. And don’t leave small children unsupervised with your cat.
Reassuring Jealous Cats: Cats are like children in many ways, so its not surprising that your older pet may be jealous of a new arrival. He may be fearful of losing territory or worried that he is about to be replaced. Extra love, attention and patience during this transition will help to reassure your pet that it is still the center of your universe! Be prepared for it to take from a week to a month before the new cat is accepted by the resident cat. Before bringing home your new cat, make sure that both old and new cats are healthy and current on their vaccinations, including Feline Leukemia. Let your cat continue to have run of the house while the new cat is confined, so that he understands he is not being pushed out of his territory. Allow him to sniff or paw under the door with your new cat, and exchange items to familiarize each animal with the others smell.
When the time comes for the two cats to meet face to face, try to give them short periods of contact, slowly increasing the time as they adapt to one another. Be sure to supervise their visits until you’re sure they are okay alone, and be prepared for some hissing and growling, which is quite normal for cats that are getting to know one another. Do not yell at or discipline either cat for hissing or growling, and in the unlikely event of a fight breaking out, break it up with a spray from a water bottle or a thrown towel, not your hands. Prevent the new cat from sleeping in any of your old cats favorite places (for example your bed) and provide each with separate food and water bowls and litter pans. They’ll probably use each others, but will appreciate having their own. Try to keep your older cats routine intact, and take every opportunity you can to pet and praise your older cat. Above all, be patient, and one day you will find your new cats grooming each other when they think you’re not looking!
Friendly Like Cats and Dogs: Most of the same advice applies to introducing cats and dogs. Again, let the dog have run of the house, and sniff at the cat under the door and exchange scented items during the first few days. You may wish to put up a baby gate in the doorway of the cats room or bring the cat into the house in a carrier so the animals can see each other before they actually meet.
Make sure the first visits in the house are supervised, with the dog on a leash if you are unsure about how friendly he will be. Encourage you dog with gentle praise if he is friendly. If the cat runs from your dog, do not allow the dog to chase it, and don’t force a cat that seems uncomfortable to be in the same room with the dog. Keep the first visits brief, then extend them as the animals become familiar with each other. Be patient, give them time, and they’ll soon learn to get along.

I think your rabbit would eat through that. We bought this for my rabbit: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751767. We can put it right up to his pen and leave him out all day (inside our house). We also added his carrying case, a storage container that he can jump on, and toys so that he won’t get bored. When we get home, we let him out for about an hour with supervision. He enjoys his fence, though, because he feels safe and he has his own little area.
Whether or not an indoor or outdoor rabbit is healthier depends on where you live. If the weather is pretty consistent, an outdoor rabbit would be fine. But if the weather is bad or there are lots of dogs and cats, and indoor rabbit is better. That way you can control the temp and he’ll be safe. Good luck!
