Whenever I ask people this question they tell me that it’s because the pet isn’t in good shape or something and it’s better to save a dog from the shelter.

But isn’t getting a dog from the pet store saving that dog as well? I mean the poor thing needs a home, that’s why it’s being sold in the first place.

Thoughts?

The reason it’s being sold in the first place is not to give it a home- it’s to keep puppy mills in business.

As hard as it is to see a cute puppy in the pet store and leave it there, it’s the right thing to do. The only way to stop puppy mills is to stop buying dogs produced there. For every dog you buy in the pet store, another one is bred in terrible conditions at a puppy mill to replace it.

    Why?
    Supply and demand.

When you buy the puppy from the petstore, they order another one from the puppymill that one came from. Puppy mill makes money. As long as there is a demand for puppymill puppies, there will be puppymills. If they suddenly couldn’t sell them, they would not stay in business. They are only in business for the money.

If you aren’t familiar with puppymills, google or someone will be along with links. Hardly the type of thing one would want to support.

Shelters are full, so full, so put animals down to maintain space. Adopting from a shelter opens up space for another dog to be stay alive. Shelters are not in it for the money. they would be happy to have an empty shelter or even an empty kennel.

Add- ALL dogs from petstores come from BYBs or puppymills regardless of what the store claims. And they will use lots of half truths and misdirections to try to claim that they get their dogs from good breeders. NO responsible breeder would even let any of their dogs go to anyone with a credit card with absolutely no screening.

    2nd add-
Not to mention the profits go directly back to puppymilling more dogs and continuing the cycle.

@JUST2- NO ONE BUT A BYB WOULD ALLOW THEIR PUPS TO SPEND MOST OF THE CRUCIAL DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES IN A CAGE IN A PETSTORE. NO GOOD BREEDER WOULD EVER ALLOW A PUPPY TO BE SOLD WITHOUT EVEN MEETING THE PERSON BUYING THE DOG.
"HOBBY" BREEDER IN PETSTORE SPEAK =BYB OR PUPPYMILL.

The dog in the pet store is being sold for one reason PROFIT and to prey upon ignorant impulsive people.

They are mass produced puppies of poor genetics, raised in miserable conditions.

Pet stores buy them from puppymills or brokers for little money and mark up the price greatly.

The ONLY place to buy a Puppy from is from a reputable breeder. Where you go to the persons home, see the Championship Certificates and the health tests, and at least one of the parents.

If you do not want to go to a reputable breeder, then the only other place to BUY a puppy is from a rescue.

Do an internet search of Puppymills and learn.

Here is a LINK that shows you where Pet Stores puppies come from…

Could you actually call yourself someone who LOVES dogs if you purchase a puppy from a pet store, knowing you are supporting these kind of people, and continuing the suffering of dogs.

Because you are indirectly purchasing the dog from a puppy mill. If people stop buying the pups, then the puppy mills would cease to exist. Sure they need homes, but they’re not sitting on death row waiting to be euthanized. What about the parents rotting away in a cage? They will continue to get neglected if people continue to buy the puppies.

Unfortunately no. You’re BUYING a dog there, and they consider it part of the other livestock they carry, which means they go get another dog once the current ones sell. Unless the dogs are there through a shelter or rescue group, you’re only buying their stock. It’s like ’saving’ a hamster or parakeet, it’s not a save at all.

Occasionally pet stores will sell groups of kittens or puppies someone gave them for free, but that doesn’t happen much.

If you really want to save a dog go to the shelter or animal control and get one that truly needs a home who would otherwise be euthenized.

Because you’re supporting the disgusting puppy mills that sell stores their sick pets! As soon as you buy a pet from a pet store, another one replaces it immediately. It’s an ongoing process and it needs to stop.

Most puppies at pet stores come from HUGE puppy farms (mills). So buying one of these OVER- PRICED puppies only keeps the mill in business. Supply and demand! If people would stop buying them…the demand would go down and in theory the supply would decrease. Your right, it does need a home…but if you wait a few months, that same puppy that is marked $1,500. will be about $200.

Pet stores only sell puppies born and raised in Puppy Mills.

Demand creates supply. Purchasing that poor little puppy in the window only lets the retailer think that Fluffybacked Wifflehounds are marketable but it also lets the Wifflhound puppy mill know that they can produce more and more and more because they will sell.

It is sad to say, but for the puppy mill puppy in the window sometimes the kindest thing for him (and more importantly his dam and other females at the same mill) is to let him go unsold.

    Its to bad to explain…

They torture beat and force these dogs to mate in massive puppy mills, this isn’t the place they show you, what you see is the window filled with " cute little puppy’s"

They kill, cramp, beat and mate the females until they dye sometimes inbreeding them all for MONEY. Just imagine a concentration camp for dogs…

Nothing but death, destruction, and disease.

If you buy from them you support them with the money the need to keep breeding and killing dogs, your killing more dogs than you SAVE by doing this…

All pet store dogs come from puppy mills. I’m sure you’ve heard about them. Puppy mills are cruel. The dogs are given no attention. They lie in their own urine and feces. Puppy mills see the dogs as products, not living things. Pet stores generally put the dog in a small crate with little attention. I’ve seen dog stores where the dogs are put into 2×2 cages, and get no attention. It’s enough to make me cry, and I’ve sat through murder videos without crying.

Buying from a pet store is supporting puppy mills and animal cruelty. It’s sad to see the dog in the tiny cage, and it’s normal to want to buy the dog to save it. But buying the dog will only cause puppy mills to breed more dogs, and then stuff them into small crates where they can barely move. Going to shelters or a responsible breeder can help stop puppy mills.

No its being sold to make a profit. No its not rescuing and never will be. buying from petshops supports puppymills no ifs ands or buts about it.

The only place you should be buying ANY dog or puppy from is either a shelter/rescue or a reputable breeder.

Do I feel bad for petshop animals? Sure anyone with a soul does but that doesn’t mean I am going to buy one. I’d rather donate my money to shelters and rescues that eventually get stuck with the pups that can’t be sold .

Buying a dog from a pet store only perpetuates and encourages the abuses that puppymills inflict. It puts money in their pockets, encouraging more unethical behaviors, and makes room for another dog to be abused. You CAN’T save every dog, and by buying from a pet store, you GUARANTEE that one more will be abused.

EDIT: A TRUE "hobby breeder" is one whose dogs are their hobby…they take their dogs to shows, agility trials, herding and hunting trials, etc. They CARE about their dogs and they would NEVER place one of their dogs in a petstore.

The breeders that sell to pet stores are scum. They breed for one purpose only: Money. Don’t insult people who make a serious hobby of their dogs by lumping them in with the dirtbag puppymillers who supply pet stores.

It’s being sold in the first place to make money. When a dog is sold from a pet store, it causes more demand for a puppy mill. The more dogs sold from a pet store = the more demand = the more money the puppy mill makes = the more times a puppy mill breeds.

The majority if not all of puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills. These are terrible horrible places and no living creature should have to live in these kinds of conditions even more an innocent creature. Getting a puppy from a pet store is basically supporting this horrible people and the way they treat innocent animals. This dogs get barely any socialization the most they see people is when they are rudely thrown from one cage to another to mate. Or when someone decides to give them a bit of food and fresh water. They are in their cages pretty much 24/7 so that’s where they feel “comfortable”. The cleaning is minimal at best so many are forced to lie in their own waste sometimes the cage bottoms are made of chicken wire.

The shelter I volunteer at did a rescue last feb from a puppy mill the condition of the dogs was horrible thank god many of them were able to be adopted to loving families. For quite few weeks nearly all of them had to be taken physical out of their cages because that’s where they felt most comfortable since that was where they were 24/7, there was some even once they did start coming out that they would run in circles a very sad sight even though they know had a lot of room to roam. Since that’s all the exercise they got in their cages. Anyone who has seen this poor creatures up close would never support such trash.

To stop puppy mills means to stop supporting them and people need to educated because many are oblivious to the conditions of that pet store puppy’s parents living condition.

Here are some videos about this horrid places from youtube please watch and educated yourself. There are many more just search puppy mills.

Keep in mind that some pet stores will have rescues/shelters come in and host adoption days. Where they will bring animals from their shelter and people can adopt them.

No… dogs bought from pet stores are from puppy mills… the more educated people are about this they will stop buying those dogs which puts puppy mills out of business i know it’s sad to see them there but if they can’t sell their dogs then they will stop buying from puppy mills and when they stop buying from puppy mills then they will eventually stop breeding. These dogs are almost always sickly.

NOT ALL PET STORES BUY FROM PUPPY MILLS!! MANY DO BUY FROM PUPPY MILLS THOUGH! BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN ALL OF THEM DO!

MY LOCAL PET STORE HAVE INDIVIDUAL HOBIE BREEDERS(DONT CONFUSE THIS WITH BYB) THAT THEY BUY FROM ONCE A YEAR OR SO!! AND YES ALL DOGS NEED HOMES! JUST BECAUSE IT NOT IN A RESCUE DOESNT MEAN IT DOESNT NEED A HOME STILL! MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE USUALLY WHEN SOME DOSE SPEND A LIL MORE MONEY ON A PUPPY OR DOG THEY USUALLY END UP KEEPING IT FOR LONGER THAT SOME THAT BUYS AN INEXPENSIVE DOG THEY TEND TO SAY LATER ON DOWN THE LINE "OH I ONLY SPENT $$$ ON IT I JUST GET RID OF HIM OR HER!!

SO TAKING IN ANY DOG AND GIVING IT A FOREVER HOME IS ALWAYS A GOOD THING!! DONT PUNISH THE PUPPY IT DOESNT KNOW IT WAS A PRODUCT OF SOMEONE OVER BREEDING!! EITHER WAY IF WE ALL STOP BUYING FROM PUPPY MILLS THERE GONNA STILL KEEP BREEDING!! AND THE ONEs THAT DONT FIND HOME SOON ENOUGH WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE SOCIALIZING PROBLEMS!! SO EITHER WAY ALL PUPPIES NEED HOMES!!!

99% of all the dogs in pet stores come from puppy mills. Puppy mills breed female dogs every time they are in heat. Once they can’t breed anymore, they hit them over the head with a metal object until they die. The dogs at puppy mills live in wired cages, have never had a bath, no human interaction, never had a walk, have never seen a vet, and they have never even felt grass in there whole lives. They hardly get any food or water. Since they live on wire their whole lives, they can’t walk on real ground. Their claws are never trimmed and grow INTO the animals paws, and the dogs themselves have to rip their nail off, which is excruciating pain. If you buy a dog from a pet store, you are supporting this. You may not know it, but you are. You ARE supporting puppy mills if you buy a dog from a puppy mill. If you get a dog from a shelter, they tell you what the medical conditions are with the dog. Pet stores sometimes hide the real information about the dog so you will buy it. Shelter dogs go through behavioral tests. If you get a dog from a shelter, you could adopt a dog that was taken from a puppy mill. Shelter dogs are great dogs. Over 50% of the dogs at shelters (depending on the place) pure breed. Tell them what dog you want and the age and they might be able to find it for you. You should look up puppy mills on YouTube. The pictures are graphic, but it shows the truth behind puppy mills. I hope if you get a dog you get it from a shelter.
